Tea Tree: Tea tree is active against clinical Candida species, as is its component 1,8-cineole (Kordali et al. 2005). Ramage et al.(2012) demonstrated that tea tree’s principal component, terpinen-4-ol, reduced the expression of interleukin-8, a major inflammatory mediator in oropharyngeal candidiasis. They also suggested that there may be a synergistic effect between eugenol in clove oil and terpinen-4-ol. In vitro, Tea tree oil is active against Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes, which are dermatophytes involved in onychomycosis (nail alteration) (Marcos-Tejedor et al. 2021). Cassella, Cassella, and Smith (2002) demonstrated that tea tree and lavender formed a synergistic combination with enhanced activity against these dermatophytes – Trichophyton rubrum and T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale.
Lemongrass: Lemongrass and citral are both active against Candida (Silva et al. 2008) and the oil has anti-inflammatory and antifungal actions with potential to treat skin infections. Lemongrass essential oil is among the most active agents against human dermatophytes (Wannissorn et al. 1996). Lemongrass essential oil is active against many keratinophilic fungi and ringworm fungi (Kishore, Mishra, and Chansouria 1993; Abe et al. 2003). Malassezia species can cause common infections or exacerbate multiple skin disorders, such as Pityriasis versicolor (PV, characterized by hypopigmented or hyperpigmented patches on the skin), folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, atopic dermatitis, and psoriasis. An in vitro study indicated that lemongrass essential oil was active against Malassezia species, and two clinical studies showed that shampoo, cream or lotion formulated with Cymbopogon citratus and C. flexuosus could be used to treat dandruff and P. versicolor (Donato et al. 2020).
Naiouli: Similar to eucalyptus radiata, niaouli stimulates the immune system and treats sinusitis and rhinitis. As a healing agent, niaouli essential oil protects and restores the skin (including after a radiotherapy session if used with with aloe vera gel), and is antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial and antimycotic.
Lavender: Lavender is active against Candida. Mijatovic et al. (2022) demonstrated that a 2% solution of lavender essential oil had a significant antifungal activity, which was equally effective against fluconazole and caspofungin susceptible and less-susceptible strains of Candida. It is also active against dermatophytes, especially when used in conjunction with tea tree (Cassella, Cassella, and Smith 2002).
How to use: Rub on fungus 1-2 times a day until gone.
